Electrical Stimulation

Electrical stimulation therapy makes the muscle contract using electric impulses delivered through electrodes on the skin in direct proximity to the muscles to be stimulated.  This therapy is used as a rehabilitation and preventive tool for partially or totally immobilized patients.  It is used in the treatment of muscle spasms and pain or can help to prevent atrophy and build strength in patients with injuries.  Patients with any type of spinal cord injury or strokes find this treatment to be especially helpful in keeping muscles active.

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Ultrasound real-time images of the musculoskeletal system provide pictures of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and soft tissue throughout the body.  These pictures help to diagnose sprains, strains, tears and other soft tissue conditions.  There is no exposure to radiation, like with x-rays which use ionizing radiation, making musculoskeletal ultrasound a safe, noninvasive test.

Moist Heat/Hot Packs or Cold Packs

Two of the most common therapies used to control pain and discomfort from injury are heat and ice.  They can be used separately or alternatively, and are often used as before or after exercise therapy.  Heat draws blood into the target tissues, delivering needed oxygen & nutrients and removing cell wasters.  It decreases muscle spams, relaxes tenseness, and relieves pain.  It can also increase range of motion.  Cold, on the other hand, constricts the blood vessels and slows circulation which reduces inflammation.  This helps to reduce muscle spasms and decrease pain.

Whirlpool

Whirlpool therapy gently circulates either warm or cold water or a combination of warm and cold water around the body part that is being treated.  The main goals of this treatment are to reduce swelling & inflammation and decrease pain.  This therapy is often used at the end of physical therapy sessions because of the strain patients put on their injury during their workout.  Whirlpool therapy can also be used in junction with applying the correct dressing to promote wound healing.

Exercise Equipment & Free Weights

Physical therapy combined with active exercise are necessary for many injuries to heal and stay healthy.  Therapeutic exercise is bodily movement prescribed to increase functional capacity or reduce and manage your pain, as well as sustain your long-term recovery and prevent a future recurrence of pain.  We use various exercise equipment, resistance bands, and free weights in a personalized program that is developed, taught and monitored based on achieving specific goals, as well as on initial & ongoing evaluations.

Decompression Therapy

Spinal Decompression Therapy is a non-surgical, non-chiropractic therapy to relieve back pain and other problems associated with spinal disc injuries.   It uses motorized traction to gently stretch the spine.  By taking pressure off the spinal disks, any bulging or herniated disks may retract.  This in turn, takes pressure off the nerves and other structures in your spine and helps to promote movement of water, oxygen and nutrient-rich fluids into the disks so they may heal.
